Spark Studio, Year 5, Session 4
Session 4: Our Learning Journey at Invictus: An Acton Academy- Inside the Spark Studio!
At Invictus: An Acton Academy, a private school serving families in Liberty Hill, Leander, and Georgetown TX, our Spark Studio learners experience hands-on learning rooted in Montessori principles, self-directed exploration, and real-world discovery. Session 4 was filled with curiosity, collaboration, and meaningful growth across subjects.
Geography
Heroes learned about the continent of Antarctica and the animals that live there. They also explored the names of the oceans and where each one is located, helping build a better understanding of the world and its geography.
Science and Nature
Learners explored the wonders of animals and nature through hands-on learning and meaningful discussions. They learned about penguins by identifying the parts of a penguin and exploring the penguin life cycle. They also learned about Arctic animals, including polar bears, using nomenclature cards to understand their habitats and life cycles.

The group discussed how animals survive winter by hibernating, migrating, or adapting to cold environments, and worked together to identify which animals use each strategy. Their curiosity continued as they explored animal footprints and discovered how snow is formed, including why each snowflake has a unique shape.
Heroes also explored the structure and function of teeth through Montessori activities. In Parts of the Teeth, they learned about the crown, enamel, dentin, pulp, and roots using models and labeling work, helping them understand how each part functions. In Types of Teeth, they discovered incisors, canines, premolars, and molars, and how each type helps in cutting, tearing, and grinding food. By observing their own teeth and matching them to their functions, heroes built both awareness and scientific understanding.
These experiences supported curiosity, observation, and a deeper understanding of the natural world and the human body.
Decimal System with 9 Layout: Montessori
A hero used the Montessori 9 layout to build numbers with units, tens, hundreds, and thousands. This hands-on activity helped them understand place value, connect numerals with quantities, and strengthen number sense and sequencing skills.
Practical Life
Heroes engaged in practical life activities such as soap grating, bubble making, and sieving. These hands-on experiences supported the development of hand strength, coordination, focus, and independence while allowing heroes to explore materials with purpose. They also celebrated Valentine’s Day by making an edible craft, chocolate-covered strawberries, which they enjoyed together as a special snack, adding joy and connection to their learning experience.
Acton Launches (AKA “Socratic Discussions”)
Heroes participated in launches designed to build empathy, resilience, and thoughtful decision-making.
In Mending a Mistake, they practiced the “3Rs”, Recognize, Reconcile, Resolve to repair friendships and take responsibility for their actions. The Gift You Didn’t Want encouraged flexibility and new ways of thinking, When Something Breaks helped heroes manage emotions and persevere.
The Superpower of Kindness showed how small acts can impact others, and The Secret Helper highlighted helping without recognition. The Treasure Conundrum explored fairness and teamwork, and Art Pause taught mindfulness with the “Look–Hand–Breathe” technique.
Through The Quiltmaker’s Gift, heroes reflected on gratitude and generosity. Fruit or Vegetable? encouraged curiosity and reasoning, and The Disney Toy focused on balancing impulse and patience.
These launches helped heroes grow as empathetic, responsible, mindful, and thoughtful members of their community.
Chess Quest: Learning Through Play and Strategy
Chess Quest is a story based chess journey that introduces players to the game one piece at a time. Beginning with the history of chess and its origins in ancient India, participants explore each chess piece through characters, stories, hands on mini games, and creative challenges.
Chess Quest is a story based chess journey that introduces players to the game one piece at a time. Beginning with the history of chess and its origins in ancient India, participants explore each chess piece through characters, stories, hands on mini games, and creative challenges.
Each week focuses on a single piece, kings, pawns, bishops, knights, rooks, and queens, allowing players to fully understand how each one moves and contributes to the game. Mini games encourage repetition, focus, and cooperation, while coloring and naming challenges add creativity and personal connection.
As the quest progresses, full games are introduced alongside stories of famous chess champions, highlighting ideas such as effort versus talent, risk versus safety, and different strategic styles. Players are encouraged to reflect after each session, developing awareness of their choices and growth over time.
Chess Quest blends imagination, strategy, and practice, showing that chess is more than a game, it is a journey of thinking, patience, and discovery.
Town Hall
During Town Hall, the group discussed how to work together without getting distracted and how to stay focused on their own tasks. They also talked about strategies for staying productive when the studio is noisy, sharing different ideas for handling distractions. Another topic was studio maintenance; the group reflected on what happens when maintenance tasks are not completed because lunch runs late. Together, they made agreements about planning ahead and following through on responsibilities.
