Session 5: Our Learning Journey at Invictus: An Acton Academy – Inside the Spark Studio!

History and Geography

Heroes learned about the continent of Europe and explored famous landmarks, animals, and birds found across different countries. This helped them understand the diversity of Europe’s geography and cultures.

They also learned about the state of Texas as part of Texas Independence Day, discovering key facts about its history, symbols, and what makes the state unique, including its heritage and identity.

Heroes explored Ireland and learned how people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day through traditions, symbols, and festive customs. They also learned about Chinese New Year and enjoyed making origami, connecting cultural learning with creativity and fine motor skills.

These experiences helped heroes build curiosity and a deeper understanding of the world.

Science, Nature & Gardening Quest

Heroes explored science and nature through hands-on learning. They learned about parts of seeds, types of seeds, parts of roots and plants, and the life cycle of plants. They also explored animals like armadillos and frogs, including their parts and life cycles.

In the gardening quest, heroes learned what plants need to grow—water, sunlight, air, soil, and helpful living things like butterflies, earthworms, and bees. They explored soil using Waseca 3-part cards and hands-on activities with different types of soil. Using tools like funnels, strainers, and magnifying glasses, they closely observed and compared soil textures.

Stories like Water, Weed, and Wait and Wanda’s Roses helped them understand patience and care in gardening. They also enjoyed creative and sensory experiences like Mud Pies and Mudshakes.

They further learned about the five layers of soil such as bedrock, parent material, subsoil, topsoil, and the organic layer and reinforced their understanding by creating an edible craft model.

Heroes planted seeds, cared for their plants, and watched them grow over time. These experiences helped them build responsibility, patience, and a love for nature.

Montessori Highlights

The Brown Stairs and Red Knobless Cylinders helped heroes refine visual discrimination of size, thickness, height, and dimension through hands-on exploration.

These materials supported skills such as observation, comparison, sequencing, and early math understanding like measurement and geometry. They also helped children develop concentration, coordination, fine motor skills, and independence through repeated practice.

Acton Launches (Socratic Discussions)

Heroes engaged in meaningful launches that encouraged critical thinking, empathy, creativity, and self-reflection.

In Let’s Go Sailing, they explored planning, teamwork, endurance, and preparation. In Frozen, they reflected on time, balance, and purposeful living. The Rabbit Listened helped them understand empathy and the importance of listening.

Through Butterfly Hero: Maria, heroes learned about resilience and transformation. The Monet Impressionism launch encouraged creativity and persistence, even when receiving feedback. In Hero Pose, they explored confidence and mindset. In Who Invented the Cars?, they stepped into the mindset of inventors, focusing on innovation and perseverance.

These experiences strengthened empathy, resilience, creativity, curiosity, collaboration, and confidence.

Measurement & Cooking Quest

Heroes explored measurement and cooking through hands-on, collaborative experiences that combined life skills, creativity, and reflection.

Through story-based launches like Cook-A-Doodle Do, Little Chef, A Fine Dessert, and others, they reflected on following instructions, learning from mistakes, and the value of teamwork and perseverance.

In practical activities, heroes made trail mix, banana sandwiches, whipped cream, butter, ranch dressing, and “Ants on a Log,” practicing measuring, chopping, mixing, and safe kitchen skills. These experiences also built patience as they observed transformations in food, such as cream turning into butter.

Through Luli and the Language of Tea, they reflected on kindness, connection, and sharing.

Overall, these experiences helped heroes build collaboration, communication, responsibility, confidence, and creativity while understanding that cooking is both a life skill and an expression of care and imagination.

Town Hall

During Town Hall, heroes discussed the frequent use of ice packs for minor injuries and agreed on using them more responsibly so the First Aid Manager is not interrupted too often. They also reflected on studio maintenance expectations, accountability, and the importance of keeping the environment clean and organized.

Another discussion focused on how to support and guide a new young hero in a learner-driven environment, emphasizing kindness, inclusion, and encouraging independence. They also reflected on caring for nature after an incident where an ant pile was disturbed, reinforcing the importance of respecting living things.
